Usher has gone through various challenges in his career, but he believes the most difficult one to overcome was being single.
The R&B star was featured on VIBE’s August cover, and in an interview published on Friday, August 4, he discussed his Las Vegas residency and fatherhood, as well as what he believes to be his most significant life lesson.
“I think the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to deal with is being single,” he said. “I don’t like being alone, and I think it’s because I didn’t have or didn’t see what I wanted out of life.
But now that I have an incredible partnership, I can have the life I always wanted, you know what I mean?
After splitting from TLC’s Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas in 2000, Usher went on to marry Tameka Foster in 2005-2009 and raise their two children, Cinco (now 15) and Naviyd (14).

He then dated his ex-manager Grace Harry from 2009-2018, and is currently in a relationship with record executive Jennifer Goicoechee. The Confessions singer and his ex-wife share a daughter, Sovereign Bo, and a son, Sir Castrello, both 1-year-olds.
Chilli opened up about her relationship with Usher in June ahead of the release of Lifetime’s TLC Forever, revealing that their split would have a lasting impact on her relationships in the future. “I even stopped dating in 2019 because I knew that if I dated someone during that time that wasn’t over Usher, it wouldn’t work out,” she said. “I never want to be on the fence.
Chilli also revealed that Usher’s Confessions album wasn’t about their breakup, despite what many people have thought since it dropped the same year they split. “I was at the studio with him the whole time,” Chilli said. “We split in 2004, but we’d get back together when we weren’t in other relationships, which is why I cut off all communication with him in 2019 to focus on myself.”
“I love hard, and I was like, ‘God, why can’t I get over this?’ and he couldn’t either,” Chilli said.
Now, Chilli is dating actor Matthew Lawrence and has never been in a relationship before. “I’ve never experienced anything like it,” she said. “He’s just trying to be the best version of himself. God-willed one day we’ll be married.”
